March Update

February has been a very busy month at Amethyst and the staff and students are extremely excited that spring is on its way!

Transition Meetings – We are beginning the process of scheduling meetings for April and May which involves students, parents, Amethyst staff and your home school staff. Transition meetings review student progress, IEP information and school-year growth. Parents are required to attend. Mrs. Harju will be contacting school boards to schedule and times/dates will be confirmed with parents. If you are aware of dates that you will not be able to attend – contact Mrs. Harju in our main office. Please note that meetings are scheduled during the day based on the availability of school board staff.

March Break – This holiday runs from March 16 – 20 and our school will be closed during this time. Have a safe and wonderful break! Classes resume on Monday, March 23rd.

February Congratulations to

Rohan for receiving our Wow Belt Award
Katie, Mylee, Reid & Nicholas for receiving our Growth Mindset Award (Silver Hardhat)
Alex, Danny & Jamee for receiving our GRIT Award (Golden Boots)
Kaylup & Nicholas for receiving our Technology Award (Golden Headset)

Term 2 IEPs

Parents – Term 2 Individual Education Plans (IEPs) were sent home on Friday, February 28th. Once you have reviewed the IEP, please sign and return one copy. The other is for your records. Please contact your teacher should you have any questions. This document will also be reviewed during our spring Transition Meetings.

Secondary School Registrations

Grade 8 & 9 Parents please ensure that you have registered your child for high school next year (September 2020). If you have not yet done so, contact your home school immediately to begin the process. Should you require assistance, please contact your child’s teacher or our school resource consultants.

ATTENTION – As mentioned during our fall Student led conferences, please submit a paper copy of your child’s high school registration to their homeroom teacher ASAP.

Student Health Services

SHS will be sending ALL medications home for the March Break on March 12th. If you wish for SHS to keep certain medications over the break, please let us know ASAP.

If there are any questions, contact Susan Tasker in Student Health Services at Ext. 1268.

Student Absences

As a reminder, we would ask that all families ensure you have contacted the school’s main office when your child will be leaving school for an appointment or absent from school due to illness or other family reasons.

**TO REPORT YOUR CHILD’S ABSENCE, PLEASE EMAIL THE SCHOOL AT janet.harju@ontario.ca OR BY CALLING (519) 453-4400 ext. #1527 (24 HOUR VOICE MAIL).

Amethyst Silent Auction

Preparations are underway for our annual Silent Auction being held this spring. Some items we have received in the past are theatre tickets, water park and bowling passes, art work, gift baskets, books, jewellery, games, homemade jams/salsas and many other items. If you have any new or very gently used items you would be willing to donate, please send them to the main office. We also collect Canadian Tire $$ to purchase items for our auction. The deadline for donations is April 17th. If you have connections with any stores, restaurants or other companies, please contact them to see if they might be willing to donate something spectacular!

Professional Activity Day

Reminder – Parents please note that Friday, March 13th is a Professional Activity Day for the Amethyst School. Our school staff will be involved in professional learning activities. There will be no classes for students on this day.

School Council Corner

Please join us for our next School Council meeting on Wednesday, April 29th (5:30 pm) being held in the David Neill Centre (DNCC). Please RSVP with Janet Harju if you are planning on attending.

Residence Team Update

Our Residence character focus for the month of March is Responsibility.

Bring on the Spring! February has flown by and we are looking forward to some nicer weather in March. During the month of February, our Elementary Ball Hockey Team has been working very hard in preparations for the Provincial Schools Ball Hockey Tournament in Milton. It has been nice to see our students developing such skills as dedication, teamwork, and commitment. This team and tournament is always a great way for our students to work hard, work together, and build a sense of community at Amethyst. We wish them all the best at their tournament! Thank you to Coach Reid and his staff for all the time and effort put in to organize this team.

Also on March 11th the Amethyst residence is hoping to attend a London Lightening Game which will serve as a fundraiser for residence. On February 11th students and staff participated in a ski trip to Boler mountain. It was great to see the students enjoying the outdoors and for many trying something new – stepping out of their comfort zone.

In March we will be starting club nights which would include American Sign Language club, Mindfulness club and others which will be based on the interest of the students.

*In February we welcomed back counsellor Kelly into the District 8 dorm after her maternity leave – welcome back Kelly!

As always, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s primary counsellor with any questions or concerns.
