Broadcasting at ECD

SHSM students participating in all three pathways will be involved in video productions and television broadcasts of ECDTV including a daily student announcement show that utilizes a digital signage system to keeps viewers up-to-date on newsworthy items. As a collective, students will learn to record, edit and package numerous school events for distribution to the school and local communities.

Broadcast Technician, Camera Operator, Makeup Artist, Computer Graphics (CG) Operator; Editor, Actor, On-air Personality, Lighting Technician Director of Photography, Production Assistant, Writer.

Certification and Training

All SHSM student will complete mandatory certification in: First Aid; CPR; WHMIS and will participate in the Junior Achievement Program as well as a portfolio development workshop. Depending on their pathway, students may also receive training in: Digital Video Editing, Digital Signage Development, Stage Combat, Scriptwriting, Makeup, Mask Making and Performance, Framing, Studio Safety and Fall Protection.

Experiential Learning and Career Exploration

All SHSM students will assist with the preparation of broadcasts that will be televised on the local community television station. Filmmaking at ECD involves a large number of students working together from initial concept to screenwriting, shooting, editing, packaging, promoting, distributing and screening..

Job shadowing and work experience opportunities will also be provided for students. Enriched Field Trips will supplement class assignments. The Toronto International Deaf Film and Arts Festival (TIDFAF), The Deaf Cultural Center and GE Canada are committed participants in all SHSM programs at The Ernest C. Drury School For The Deaf.

“Reach Ahead” Opportunities

SHSM students will participate in annual field trips and visitations to post secondary options including tours of Sheridan College, the National Institute For The Deaf (NTID) / Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Gallaudet University

Co-op Education

All SHSM students must take two credits in Co-op Education and will be placed in appropriate settings.
